Mastering

The final listening pass before your music goes to streaming, download stores or a pressing plant — with meters that behave and ears that do not trust meters alone.

Mastering engineer listening on monitors with rack gear

Mastering is not a second mix. It is the step where we view your mixed tracks as one release: level, tonal balance, stereo image, starts and ends, and how track two feels after track one. At Nanigolixar in Amsterdam we work in a dedicated mastering chain, separate from tracking and mixing rooms, so we listen with fresh perspective.

You send stereo files or agreed stems; we deliver masters for streaming, download and optional vinyl or CD. Whether you mix yourself or use our mixing service, we schedule mastering once the mix is signed off.

Process

  1. 01

    Delivery

Upload mixes with headroom, track list, order and target formats. We confirm receipt and price within 2 business days.

  2. 02

    Reference

We listen on studio monitors and headphones, compare briefly to your references and note goals for loudness and character.

  3. 03

    Master

EQ, dynamics, limiting and fades per track; sequence and gaps for EP or album. We discuss metadata where it applies.

  4. 04

    Delivery

You receive distribution formats plus a short note on levels. Up to 2 revision rounds are included.

When mastering helps

If the mix is done and you want one coherent sound across several tracks, mastering is the logical next step. Even a single can benefit when you want competitive level on platforms without reopening the mix. If the balance still feels wrong, fix the mix first — mastering does not replace missing decisions.

We master projects tracked here and mixes made elsewhere. Tell us if you plan physical media later so we leave appropriate headroom for cutting.

What we check technically

We look at true peak, integrated loudness and dynamic range where it matters for your platform. Harsh sibilance or boomy lows are corrected only when it serves the release — no blanket preset on every song.

Stereo width and mono compatibility are checked on mid-sized and small speakers. For vinyl we discuss bass management and side length with your plant or our usual guidelines.

Singles, EPs and albums

A single receives one master plus instrumental or clean versions if you supply them. EPs and albums are treated as a sequence: we match levels and colour between tracks and place crossfades or silence to your list.

Larger packages are priced below; extra tracks outside a bundle are quoted per piece. Unsure how many songs you will submit? Ask for an estimate via contact with your track list.

Formats and file naming

Default delivery is 16-bit/44.1 kHz WAV for many aggregators, plus 24-bit WAV for archive. Other specs (for example MFiT or HD download) belong in your booking notes.

Files use clear names with track number and title as you provide them. Delivery is via secure link — keep your own backup. We retain mix uploads 12 months while you remain a client of Nanigolixar B.V..

Preparing mixes for mastering

Send stereo mixes with headroom above 0 dBFS: typically peaks between -6 and -3 dBFS, no mix-bus limiter unless that is intentional and you want to keep it. Export without irreversible dither we cannot undo.

Include a text file or sheet with titles, ISRC wishes and order. If you are still mixing, mix budget guide helps plan time and cost.

Revisions and workflow

Each mastering job includes 2 revision rounds: you listen at home and on earbuds, send time-coded notes, we adjust. Further rounds are available at an hourly rate by agreement.

We do not ship anonymous presets; an engineer attends each master. For urgent release dates, tell us upfront — we will say honestly if it fits within Mon–Fri 09–23, Sat 10–20, Sun closed and our current queue.

FAQ

How fast is turnaround?

A single is usually scheduled within a few business days after complete delivery. EPs and albums take longer; we confirm a date at booking.

Should my mix already sound loud?

No — send a balanced mix with headroom. Heavy mix-bus limiting makes mastering harder; we set final level.

Do you master for vinyl?

Yes on request, with tailored processing and delivery for cutting. Provide side lengths.

Can you master from stems?

Stem mastering is possible by quote. Standard prices assume stereo mixes.

What if I need more tweaks after revisions?

After 2 rounds we bill extra work per hour or per track. We agree scope before starting.
