Vocal preparation before your studio day

A vocal session in Amsterdam costs time and money; solid prep is the gap between a smooth afternoon and hours hunting for usable takes. This guide targets artists booking vocal recording at Nanigolixar, though the habits help anywhere you record.

Singer warming up and packing gear for studio day

Why prep protects booked studio time

In our 2 iso booths at Haarlemmerweg 247, setup already takes fifteen to thirty minutes before the first take counts. Open lyrics, tempo or backing tracks eat that budget in talk instead of singing. Artists who lock text a week ahead and know their guide at home usually finish more sections inside the booked block than those rewriting in the booth.

That is not a demand for perfection — it is clarity. Your engineer tunes voice and microphone; you bring performance and content. Together we keep pace without shredding your cords.

One week out: lyrics, tempo and references

Lock lyrics: print them or load a charged tablet. Mark ad-lib slots, breaths and trouble words. When booking, send tempo, key and a WAV or stems — not a lone lossy MP3 unless we agree that upfront.

Do not blast reference tracks all week; ears need rest. Skip a loud gig or shouting night out right before the session. For backing vocals, sketch harmonies or record a rough home demo so we refine in studio instead of inventing from scratch.

The night before: sleep, route and bag

We sit in Amsterdam-West at Tram 13 and bus 22 stop at Haarlemmerplein; from there it is about a six-minute walk along Haarlemmerweg. From Amsterdam Centraal station it is roughly a twelve-minute walk toward Westerpark. Limited on-street parking; bicycle racks in front of the entrance.. Allow slack if you drive; on-street parking is limited. Bike or public transport reduces stress. Core hours are Mon–Fri 09–23, Sat 10–20, Sun closed; night sessions on request.

Target seven to eight hours of sleep. Pack water, lyrics, your own headphones if you rely on them, and a layer — booths run cool for the mic. Go easy on alcohol; mucus builds faster than you expect. Tell us via contact about meds or allergies that affect voice so we plan breaks.

Session day: food, drink and warm-up

Hydrate through the day, not only at the mic. Ease off heavy dairy or spice two to three hours ahead. Eat something light with slow carbs — oats, banana, bread — about two hours before. Moderate coffee is fine for many voices; excess can add tremor.

Warm up ten to fifteen minutes: shoulders, jaw, tongue. Soft sirens, lip trills and humming in the song range. Do not open on the highest chorus. For rap or spoken word, drill articulation slow, then speed. In studio we set pop filter, headphone mix and gain before labeling takes for comping.

What we prep in the booth

Nanigolixar runs 3 rooms; vocals happen in an iso booth with an engineer behind glass. We load labeled tracks, markers and a headphone mix you can trust. Mic choice follows your tone — say in the brief if you want warmth, air or edge.

Up to 8 people fit the facility; vocals usually need only you in the booth. Bringing a producer? Say so early so monitoring and seating are ready. We retain session material 12 months; you keep your own backup.

Realistic time and rates

Studio time is €121 per hour incl. 21% VAT, or €462 for four hours and €847 for eight. One single with lead and a few doubles often fits a half day when text and beat are ready; a multi-song project may need a full day or two blocks.

Free cancellation until 5 days before the date; after that the 30% deposit rule in terms and conditions applies. Book through contact; we reply within 2 business days. Unsure on length? Send a demo and we estimate without a sales pitch.
